a collaborative creation story

The need for contextualized mental health care, training, and education is no longer a secret. Local leaders and organizations who serve communities most affected by mental health needs are creating solutions that matter.

In 2018, Brio Health Global launched a pilot partnership with Fundación Casa Victoria to create accessible, locally-led addiction counseling training in vulnerable neighborhoods of Quito, Ecuador. This first-ever training, and the respective care offered for free or low cost, provided a first step to implementing long-overdue plans of helping families struggling with addiction.

Over time, Brio’s growing partnerships with community leaders and global organizations revealed the need for a responsive, human-centered, and research-informed mental health design process to support local expertise in creating programs that work. These processes make it possible for human service organizations and community leaders to design mental health-focused and mental health-informed programs that serve the most critical needs their participants face, making it possible for individuals to access support within their lifetime.

With the support of funders and collaborators, Brio launched the Mental Health Design Toolkit in 2020, an open-source set of foundational frameworks and principles for designing effective mental health support and programming. These tools are adaptable across regions and cultures, informed by our high-touch partnerships with experienced social impact teams in Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and India.

How we hope to serve you

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the need for a wide array of support services in low-income areas is ever increasing. Mental health is no exception, and organizations on the front lines witness the care gap firsthand. In addition to the Mental Health Design Toolkit, Brio offers programs and services to equip leaders like you in developing care for your community and your team. If there are specific needs or concerns you would like to discuss with our team, please use the contact form below to reach us.

Are you working on mental health and wellbeing in your context? We would love to hear from you.

Many thanks to our supporters.

Early in Brio’s founding, visionary funders chose to support the creation of this toolkit. Thanks to them, we have been able to test our processes across various global regions, and hope to continue to develop this resource by increasing its usability and accessibility.
